In what would represent a new sign of closer defense ties between the two countries, China is reportedly considering donating its last Type 053 frigates in service to the Indonesian Navy, which would significantly strengthen its surface fleet.

Specifically, the vessels in question would belong to the Type 053H3 variant, of which China has built a total of ten units, currently retaining eight after selling the remaining two to Bangladesh in 2019.

It is worth noting that the Type 053H3 frigate fleet was incorporated by the Chinese Navy starting in the 1990s, designed as a continuation of the Type 053H2G models.

Reviewing some of their main known characteristics, these are ships with a displacement of 2,250 tons, a length of 112 meters, and a beam of 12.4 meters, accommodating a crew of 168 personnel.

Their main armament includes four-cell launchers capable of deploying eight YJ-83 surface-to-surface missiles, complemented by a turret with two 100mm PJ33A guns and additional torpedo launchers.

Furthermore, the ships underwent a mid-life upgrade, which included modernization of their radar suites with electronic support systems similar to those on Type 054 frigates. Their air defense capabilities were enhanced by replacing the older HQ-7 missiles with the more modern HHQ-10, while the secondary 37mm Type 76A guns were replaced with new 30mm CIWS Type 630 systems.

With this in mind, it is notable that these frigates would be up to ten years newer than the other potential alternative Indonesia might consider to modernize its navy: the Abukuma-class destroyers being retired by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force — a possibility also explored by neighboring Philippines.

Additionally, a donation from China would reduce costs and legal obstacles, whereas Japan is constrained by its legislative framework when exporting weaponry.

It is also important to note that China and Indonesia are already moving toward finalizing a significant agreement for the transfer of used J-10B fighters from the former to the latter, with financial support from Beijing.

Alongside this, negotiations are underway for the possible sale of Type 22 fast attack craft, CM-302 cruise missiles, and YJ-12 coastal defense missiles. According to estimates reported in October, China is preparing to provide a loan of around USD 3.1 billion, which would give Indonesia greater budgetary flexibility.
